2. What is Extended Panel (EP)?

It is important to understand how different insurers manage their extended panels (EP) and what that means for you.

Income and HSBC Life

Both Income and HSBC Life implement their EP through pre-selected contracts, meaning they choose the specialists who are part of their EP.

Income differentiates between Panel and EP specialists, offering distinct benefits and considerations for each group.

HSBC Life, on the other hand, treats Panel and EP specialists the same way. They do not use the term “Extended Panel” specifically; instead, they refer to all Panel and contracted EP specialists as simply part of their Panel.

Singlife

Singlife approaches the EP differently by requiring pre-authorisation. For a specialist to be considered part of the EP under Singlife, pre-authorisation is mandatory. If a specialist does not receive pre-authorisation, they will be classified as a Non-Panel specialist.

3. Is Pre-Authorisation compulsory?

Pre-authorisation is not compulsory but it is highly recommended.

Here’s why:

  1. Confirmation of Coverage: Pre-authorisation helps confirm whether a procedure or treatment is covered under your plan, reducing the risk of claim rejections later on.

  2. Cost Management: It provides an estimate of the costs that will be covered by the insurer, helping you manage out-of-pocket expenses more effectively.

  3. Streamlined Claims Process: Pre-authorisation can make the claims process smoother, as the insurer and healthcare provider are already aligned on the coverage details.

While it’s not mandatory, obtaining pre-authorisation can provide peace of mind and financial clarity before undergoing treatment.
